Decatur, Georgia, boasts a history as rich and diverse as the community it houses today. Originally inhabited by Native Americans, the area became a crossroads for trails, most notably the Sandtown and Shallowford trails. Officially established on December 10, 1823, Decatur was named in honor of United States Navy Commodore Stephen Decatur. Early settlers were primarily farmers and tradesmen of English, Scottish, and Irish descent.

During the American Civil War, Decatur found itself at a strategic point in Sherman's Atlanta Campaign. Confederate cavalry attacked Union supply wagons here during the Battle of Atlanta. The second half of the 20th century saw Atlanta expand, and Decatur experienced a period of economic decline and white flight. However, strategic downtown development plans helped the city regain its economic vigor. Today, Decatur is known as a progressive city with a high level of citizen involvement.
